can you claim job seekers whilst registering as a childminder and finding clients?

i am in the process of registering, and someone asked today why i didnt claim job seekers (thought never entered my head to be honest) but i dont know if i would be able to as im not actually seeking work, im waiting to register (and have been told this could be upto 3-4 months as the crbs are taking ages!)
and then i have to find children to look afer. we have just bougth a house that need loads of work doing to it so the extra income would be a bonus, i have written to several nurseries in the area for temp work but none have any vacancies.
im not the sort to claim benefits and do nothing (i have worked since i was 16 and only gave up after complications in my pregnancy and then moving house to a whole new area) but as that someone said..i have paid taxes so why not?
im planning on ringing the job centre office but wondered if anyone else could help. thx in advance x
keyboard - i have certificates, most than more childminders, given that i was a nursery manager for 10 years, have studied childcare at uni have my first aid and the certficate needed to childmind!! and with the prices of houses/fuel etc im sure im not the only one who is struggling with finances! just because im enquiring about job seekers, doesnt mean i am some kind of scrounger, out to live on handouts, and not lift a finger to work! so dont take that tone with me you judgemental tosser!

What can we claim? Husband lost his job!?

My husband and I both 38 have never been in a dole office in our lives - let alone claimed any benefits, so we have no clue what comes next. Husband has been to register, but because I work 18 and half hours per week, we were told that we would not get any help and he would only get £60 a week. We have one school age child and a BIG mortgage..... 1) what's next, 2) Is there something we could do to increase our chance of claiming more money and 3) How do you get free school meals. He is searching for a job everyday, but in his industry (Building and construction) it's pretty bleak at the moment. Can anyone give any suggestions?..... only proper, helpful and sensible answers please as we have enough worry to deal with. Thanks in advance.

What benefits can we claim?

My wife has been on maternity pay following the birth of our daughter. This has now run out so she has applied for Jobseekers Allowance but this has been denied because she's not able to work full time. You know, what with the taking care of the baby thing.

We get child tax credits (not working tax credits because, shock, horror, I earn nearly £18,000 a year and that's enough for a family of 3 to live on apparently) and, erm that's it. We also don't qualify for housing benefit or council tax benefits.

Is there anything else anyone knows of that we can try to claim? I know it'll be hard because we're married, white and I work for a living but there must be something we've missed and the staff at the local office are about one step up from useless!

Told to claim child benefit for my partner…?

Ok this is a weird one, I'm 21 and I got made redundant a couple of months ago so I have had to claim JSA, I tried to add my partner who is 17 onto my claim and I was told she would not be entitled to anything because she is in fulltime education (over 16hours) and I was then advised to claim child benefit and child tax credit for her.

I feel a little uneasy at the idea of me having to claim these sort of benefits for my partner. So is this the path I need to go down or is she not entitled to a benefit of her own..?
