Child Benefit Online ..unravelling child benefit

8Dec/097

Which of you receives the child tax credits and child benefits you or your partner?

Who receives the child tax credits and child benefits on their accounts, husband or the wife??

My husbands not working but he is receiving money on my account for job centre, but at the moment i get the child tax credits and the child benefit so that way i easily spend on my child how i like.

But he wants to change the accounts he wants to start receiving them in his account. What does everyone think?

You are technically primary carer ie mum, so the ctc are paid for the care clothes etc for the children, therefore you get it for kids. It is not your husbands money it is your children's. So why change the way its paid Why does it matter to him what account its paid into? I'm stay at home mum ctc paid to me. THAT WONT CHANGE no matter what. who does the shopping in your house - you. So what will happen is every time you need clothes shoes for kids you have to go cap in hand to him. Don't change the account.

  1. The operative phrase here is "husband not working". The tax credits belong to you. Tell him to go find a job and support his family if he wants to claim the credits. He just wants free money. Mama don’t play that!

  2. It should be shared. If one claims it, the other can’t. Marriage is 50/50. So whoever gets it on paper, the other should be able to share in it.

  3. If he’s prepared to be responsible for feeding and clothing the children and you believe he will then what’s the problem? I would be useless at that so my wife gets the child benefit.

  4. Hello,

My benefits come to me, but I deal with pretty much all the family finances.

My husband will totally say that he is rubbish with money. I know he is from bitter experience!

I think if you are good at sorting the money out, you should do it. If he is better, then he should.

I don’t spend all the money on the children though. Mine goes towards the whole family expenses. My husband does have money to spend because he earns it.

I would keep hold of the money if your husband isn’t working. Why does he need money? If you are paying the bills, and the essential costs, then if he needs pocket money he can go out and earn it.

Benefits are not so generous that he can have money to spend willy-nilly!

My husband was out of work but I said if you want cash to spend then do a Betterware round. He has done and he loves it.

    Wishing you all the best,
