Of course not, how would single men get it if they had to qualify for child benefit?
Or older people either?

No you don’t have to receive any kind of benefit to apply for housing and council tax benefit you just need to be on minimum/low wage job and not earn more then the government says you need to live on.The government states that a single person with no children only needs £64.00 a week to live on after rent and council tax is paid. So after your rent is paid (on a suitable sized property, a single person can’t expect the council to fund a 2 bedroom house) if you have less then £64.00 a week it’s likely you’ll receive some amount however small of housing and council tax benefit. If you still have more then £64.00 after paying rent your more then likly be told you earn enough to support yourself. Remember though the figures on how much rent a person can claim is already set, if your under 25 and single you can only claim for a bedsit or house share equal to around £65 a week in most areas other then places like London. IF your over 25 and single or in a couple with no children you can claim for a 1 bedroom usually equal to about £90 a week etc. So just bare that in mind when you apply
